Building Computers

dragon
Having been working with comps now for several years, they no longer appear as ferocious, frustrating beasts as they did at first. I now have a few courses and subsequent certificates tucked under my belt, and feel a little more confident about tackling computer probs. I am always researching the hardware for new units having just built one using a 64 bit chip. The criterion I have based my research on, leans toward the future acquisition of the Meade telescope I mentioned in my astronomy page. But the unit is not entirely for Astronomy, designing it to serve my other interests. The unit then will have to be capable of coping with music, astronomy and software engineering related tasks. The hardware packages available on the web offer a variety of choices to this end; however, the skill in computer building, I have found, relates to ones ability to determine what is compatible with what.
The windows operating systems nowadays are becoming expensive, and as far I am concerned have gone beyond my resources. I currently use an old version of Win2k with its updates, and while it does what I want, I will continue with it. But over the past several years, a friend has introduced me to the Linux freebie system. We originally settled for the Mandrake distro (now Mandriva), using it with win2k as a dual boot option.
It supports all my ideas that an operating system shares an affinity with a shopping precinct, and should be free, enabling one to access the web to shop for the software you need to buy to run on it. With the Mandriva 2007 O/S free download; I can now afford to buy the various programmes I need to run on it. Another page in the future will relate the progress of the build as each component is purchased- the problems negociated and how they were overcome. I still have a considerable amount to learn but I am motivated and spend a lot of time pulling old comps to bits and rebuilding them, getting a real buz when they fire up successfully.
