COMPUTING
Programming
To aid me in understanding computers better, I undertook an 'A' level on the subject, which involved the tasks everyday computing was used for. Within the course was a considerable programming input using the high level language 'Turbo Pascal'. I don't wish to mislead anyone who reads this and may mistakenly come to the conclusion that I am in any way a boffin on the subject of programming- such a conclusion is far from the truth. I have, however, long been interested in writing my own software, mainly for the interest but also from a practical sense. The software available nowadays becomes more complex, and in my case, exceeds the boundaries of its usefulness. In that I mean, for example, I have tried to use various programs to assist me in maintaining a reliable record of my household budget; only to be confused by well meaning but over complicated facets of the program used. I won't name-drop. During my 'A' level I chose to write a program for the course-project that would do all I required to satisfy my needs

The simple intention behind my decision was well meaning enough, but was made without any prior knowledge of the complexities of programming. In retrospect, it would have been wiser to have chosen a course that would have steered me more gently into the requirements of the 'A' level prospectus relative to the time scale allowed. However, the 'Home Budget Manager' program came into being and the planning and analysis phase embarked upon. I am not going to bore you with the details of this phase, but merely wish to say that a considerable amount of work was involved over many weeks. My heart goes out to the young students in our colleges tackling several 'A' levels at once.
Following two years of hard work and many late nights spent at the computer, I am glad to say that it has all been worth while, and that I became the possessor of an 'A' level computing certificate at grade 'C'. To you boffins out there, this must seem a trivial achievement; boasting a fairly mundane grade. But to me, following many years absent from serious study it was, to say the least, uplifting. For any of you out there undergoing similar studies I have posted all my code generated over the two years I studied. There are however, various links on the web to sites which provided me with help. My thanks go to those experts in the field of programming, and without whose guidance, my achievement would have been considerably more difficult.
