| Since that first intrepid introduction, my current
computer, or should I say, computers, have now become an integral part of
my everyday life. At some point of the day one of them will be switched
on, and a task executed. Nowadays, their value is taken for granted and
not appreciated until some failure occurs, and then like a fish out of water
I flounder until the problem is rectified. 'Keep fit', I have since found
essential if you intend to spend a lot of time at the keyboard. There are
countless tempting games on the market that can stretch the intellect but
not the body, absorbing one for hours. Skiing, golf and regular visits to
the gym suffice to keep me active, and I find the disciplined regime I have
set myself works well. As I complete this short article, I ponder the media
power of computers. I marvel at how, in these modern times, somewhere in
the world another person like me may read this on their unit and be able
to respond similarly. There exists on the web a wealth of information, all
available at one's fingertips. Interestingly though, how much is this electronic
wizardry manipulated to secretly scrutinise us from within the wings of
society? The sophistication of the internet is racing ahead at an ever increasing
rate; incomprehensible to the average user and controls more and more of
our daily lives. Each year, our routines become more mechanised, the term,
'couch potato' more relevant. So what is the choice? Become familiar with
this technology or be left on the shelf to stumble blindly on into this
new age? It seems I have made my choice, and intend to exploit to the maximum
what I can from computers. But, I am determined it will be at a price I
can afford, and shall relate to all aspects of my life. |
