ABOUT ME

The early years of my life, up to the age of ten, were occupied with a struggle against ill-health suffering very severely from bronchial asthma. This subsequently had a marked effect on my academic achievments for the future. On reaching puberty I left school barely able to read or write, and viewed the meagre employment opportunities available to me unrealistically. A post-education period of approximately nine months on a local farm subsequently revealed to me the true gravity of my situation. I was in no doubt now that farming was not going to be my chosen career. For the first time in my young life I had an inkling on what the lack of an education meant for one′s future endeavours and sought advice from my parents.

My Father was a carpenter and joiner and suggested the building trades. I viewed the possibilities with him before settling for an apprenticeship in decorating and associated subjects. The succeeding years witnessed my development in the building trade, which expanded to encompass a virtual insight into my father′s trade with my becoming proficient also in working with timber. During the autumn of 1967, a dramatic decision was made by my family to move to Cornwall. I felt compelled to join them as I was inwardly dissatisfied with my situation, and thought the extent of the change might produce new opportunities. The succeeding years, following the move, saw the building industry fall into decline and caused me to review my future. Having suffered the degradation of being jobless during the past I resolved to find some form of work and from that platform plan for a future.

The opportunity presented itself in one week's work as a porter at the local hospital, which following interview, finally concluded in full time employment extending to some five years. I enjoyed work for the first time in my life and resolved to make a career in the ′NHS′. Over those five years I studied for ′O′ levels and passed sufficient to apply for ′SRN′training. On the horizon was a course entitled ′Operating Department Assistant′. Though successful at interview for ′SRN′ I settled for the ′ODA′ course as the practical aspect of the anaesthetic machinery and Theatre work interested me. I successfully applied for a place on the theatre ′ODA′ course and commenced August 1979 and concluded with the examinations during the autumn of 1981. I took up post as an ′ODA′ in the ′Royal Cornwall Hospitals Treliske′ in September of the same year.

Character Profile

Since my earliest recollections I have always been aware of a very strict discipline. My Mother implemented a family code of Practice that instilled into me a common respect for other people's feelings, wishes and property. I am very supportive of those directly involved in my life whether connected socially or through business. I firmly believe that one can achieve anything one desires if the motivation and commitment exists and the means to organise oneself; I have proved this time and again. I am not without fault, and concede that within myself lies a feeling of sensitivity towards certain attitudes shown to me by my fellow colleagues. During the trade years of my life, the problem scarcely revealed itself. But working intimately with people, as one does in hospital work, I have had to discipline myself to consider the other persons point of view. This, however, does not mean I can be walked over, but have learned to put forward an argument that debates the problem to a satisfactory conclusion.

Like everyone coexisting in their chosen career, familiarity breeds contempt and one′s job can seem a chore. But I can in all honesty say that if at that particular point in my life I was to stand at that initial threshold knowing what I know now, I would take up the challenge once again. I live my life governed by an organised regime of systems, which I find works well and provides the motive to meet new challenges that arise occasionally to my detriment as well as advantage. In the document above, I feel I have briefly illustrated my achievements that subtends from a time of relative illiteracy to the present day, and can apply myself confidently to any future projects presenting themselves.
